What does this test measure?

Horse allergies are triggered by tiny particles from a horse's skin, fur, and dander. The main allergen, Equ c 1, is found in horse hair, sweat, and saliva and can become airborne, causing reactions even without direct contact. This test helps identify whether your immune system reacts to horse proteins, supporting diagnosis and treatment decisions for people who ride, work with, or are around horses.

This test is recommended if you develop sneezing, nasal congestion, watery eyes, skin rashes, or breathing difficulties around horses or in equestrian environments. It is especially useful for riders, stable workers, and children who spend time around horses and experience recurring allergy symptoms.

What a high value can mean

High IgE levels indicate sensitisation to horse dander. This supports a horse allergy diagnosis and may explain symptoms like rhinitis, conjunctivitis, asthma, or skin reactions when exposed to horses or horse-related environments.

What a low value can mean

Low or negative IgE levels make horse allergy unlikely. If symptoms persist around horses, other allergens present in stables — such as dust, mould, or hay — may be the cause.

Good to know

Can horse allergens travel on clothing?

Yes. Horse allergens are sticky and can be transferred via clothing, hair, and equipment. People who are around horses can inadvertently carry allergens into schools, homes, and workplaces.

Is it possible to ride horses if I have a mild allergy?

In some cases, yes. With antihistamines, proper gear, and allergy management strategies, people with mild horse allergies may still ride. Consult an allergist for personalised guidance.

Does this test detect allergies to other animals?

No. This test is specific to horse proteins. Separate IgE tests are needed for other animals such as cats, dogs, or cows.
