What does this test measure?

What if your blood could predict joint problems years before they start? That's essentially what CCP antibodies do. Also known as ACPA, these autoantibodies target specific proteins in your body and are highly specific for rheumatoid arthritis. Unlike rheumatoid factor, which can be positive in all sorts of conditions, CCP antibodies are laser-focused on RA. They can even be detected in healthy people years before clinical RA appears. That's powerful information to have.

This test makes sense if you have RA symptoms but a negative rheumatoid factor test, if RA runs in your family, or if you have joint inflammation that looks like RA but doesn't quite meet all the criteria yet. It fills in the gaps that RF sometimes leaves behind.

What a high value can mean

A positive CCP test means your body is producing antibodies against specific proteins — and that's highly suggestive of rheumatoid arthritis. These antibodies can predict the future development of RA and may be present many years before symptoms show up. Combine a positive CCP with a positive rheumatoid factor, and you've got the most complete picture of RA risk available.

What a low value can mean

A negative CCP means those specific antibodies weren't found. But not everyone with RA produces them. RA is ultimately a clinical diagnosis, and a negative test doesn't fully rule it out. Your symptoms and medical history are still the most important pieces of the puzzle.

Good to know

How is the CCP test different from rheumatoid factor?

CCP is more specific. Rheumatoid factor can be positive in many autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, but a positive CCP strongly points to RA. Run them together and you get the most accurate diagnostic picture available.

Can CCP antibodies predict RA before symptoms appear?

They can. Research shows CCP antibodies can be found in blood samples years before RA symptoms develop. That makes them a seriously valuable tool for early risk identification, especially if the disease runs in your family.
