What does this test measure?

Progesterone is the hormone your body leans on for balance. It works in tandem with estrogen — when progesterone is too low relative to estrogen (hello, estrogen dominance), things get messy. We're talking mood swings, sleep problems, cycle chaos, and that general 'something's off' feeling. In men, progesterone supports prostate health and hormonal equilibrium. It doesn't get the spotlight it deserves.

Progesterone testing helps confirm ovulation (tested on day 21), evaluate miscarriage risk, and identify hormonal imbalances behind irregular periods, headaches, mood swings, sleep issues, or breast tenderness. If you're trying to conceive, this is essential data.

What a high value can mean

High progesterone can be caused by ovarian cysts, non-viable pregnancy, stress, excessive caffeine, smoking, or certain health conditions. Signs include persistent fatigue, bloating, breast tenderness, mood swings, headaches, dizziness, and weight gain around the middle.

What a low value can mean

Low progesterone can result from declining ovarian function, stress, ageing, obesity, or menopause. You might experience irregular or skipped periods, spotting, heavy bleeding, mood swings, anxiety, depression, fatigue, breast tenderness, low libido, weight gain, and sleep disturbances.

Before your appointment

Do not take this test while on hormonal contraceptives. Note the day of your menstrual cycle. Bring valid ID to your appointment. If you take a supplement containing biotin (often sold for hair and nails), pause it for two days before the test, as high doses can distort the result.

  • Bring photo ID to the sampling location.
  • You do not need a doctor's referral — your referral is issued when you order.
  • Tell the staff which test you have ordered if they ask.

Good to know

Why is progesterone tested on day 21?

Day 21 is roughly one week after expected ovulation — that's when progesterone should be at its peak. It confirms whether ovulation actually happened.

Can stress affect progesterone levels?

It absolutely can. When you're stressed, your body redirects resources from progesterone to cortisol production. They share the same building block (pregnenolone).

Is progesterone important for men?

More than you'd think. While mostly associated with women, progesterone supports prostate health and hormonal balance in men too.
